AEW Dynamite 6/10 graced our television, and we saw sees another TV Title… Uh, TNT Championship defense, tag teams are all the rage, and a ton of action crammed into two fast-paced hours. Here we go:
FTR defeat The Butcher and The Blade:
Cash Wilder and Dax Harwood make their in-ring debut tonight. On guest commentary is Le Champion Chris Jericho and he’s gold for this one. Putting over how these two have “revived” tag team wrestling and truly brought tag team wrestling to a new level and to new attention. Also of note, Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson were shown a few times during the match, eyeing the newcomers. Shawn Spears did not look happy.
Great match, a few missteps from B&B, but overall very enjoyable and you could tell Cash and Dax were enjoying themselves. They win the match with “The Good Night Express” – Formerly the Shatter Machine followed by a spike piledriver off the turnbuckle.
Post match, The Young Bucks wanted to formally welcome and introduce themselves, which resulted in an odd rage-promo from Matt Jackson, however this was short lived as Butcher, Blade, Jimmy Havoc, Kip Sabian, Kenny Omega, and Hangman Page all jumped in for a brawl. I’ll be honest, I’m not sure what this accomplished, but I get the sense tag team wrestling will be a focal point in the coming months.
Penelope Ford & Nyla Rose defeated Kris Statlander & Hikaru Shida
Another good match, where all four had a lot of ring time to try and out-wrestle each other. Crazy moment where Rose hits both opponents with her top rope flying knee. With Sabian distracting the ret, Rose tosses the Women’s Championship to Ford, who uses it to clock Shida for the pinfall. Great story work here, Ford is going to be a future threat to Shida.
The Best Friends & Orange Cassidy defeated Jake Hager, Santana, and Ortiz.
Damn this was a fun match to watch. Cassidy gets a hot tag and goes nuts. Holy crap he’s great when not in sloth-mode. High-flying and mat-busting. A reversal rollup earns the win, however also earns a post-match beat-down by the Inner Circle, with the Orange one getting clocked in the head with Floyd, busting him open. Things get worse, as Jericho then clobbers him with… a bag of oranges.
While the segment seemed to drag out a bit, the point is clear. In the future, we get Chris Jericho vs. Orange Cassidy. This is money. MONEY!!!
Not a fan of the constant use of middle-fingers. Seems trashy.
MJF belittles everyone, until Billy Gunn, with sons in tow tries to put him in his place. We will get Gunn vs. MJF next week.
Sammy Guevara defeated Colt Cabana, who appears to have accepted the invitation from The Dark Order. Not since the courting of Christopher Daniels have we seen the Dark Order try hard to recruit. Sammy and Colt had a fun match, really enjoyable. Not sure if the finish was a botch-turned-pinfall or this was the intention.
Also post match, Matt Hardy displays signs of multiple personalities as he praises Sammy, but warns him to leave the Inner Circle if he really wants to succeed.
This is a bit different, sometimes he’s Matt Hardy, sometimes he’s “Big Match Matt” and sometimes, Damascus takes over. Interesting.
In the parking lot, Moxley arrives and mouths off on Brian Cage, but specifically Taz. This prompts an altercation which results in Mox being planted into a windshield. Ouch. Big ouch. Great promos, sells the brute toughness of both. Cage doesn’t need to speak, he knows his role.
TNT Championship: Cody retains against Marc Quen
Matt Hardy and Isiah Kassidy give their support before going to the back. Lot of Matt Hardy tonight. Really good match, only gripe is the over-use of Quen’s prior injury as a reason for his loss. The kid is talented, he’s a great tag wrestler and tonight did well in single’s action, but the outcome was never in doubt. Cody had some weird heel moments, which I’ve noticed on more than one occasion from booked babyfaces, also overtly taking the heel route. Quen had some fantastic offense in the air, but Cody owned the mat. Handshake and a hug doesn’t close the show, but a brawl with Cody, Private Party, and the Inner Circle. Hager challenges Cody for Fyter Fest.
Final Thoughts: AEW Dynamite 6/10 was a good show this week, although a few moments I wasn’t sure where the purpose of some segment were laid out. If tag team wrestling will be highlighted more in the coming weeks, I’m all game for it. I do worry, it seems the roster is filling up fast, and early signees are suddenly used as enhancement talent.
