Last week ended with Nathaniel Malick (Thomas E. Sullivan, The Irishman) hijacking the Zephyr with the intent of finding Fitz (Iain De Caestecker, Overlord). Given that this is the good guys’ main way of transportation, that’s a pretty big deal. Malick has gone from a nuisance to a serious threat. He has an unpredictability that, in a way, makes him even more dangerous than the Chronicoms.

The season had somehow not shown Fitz at all until now. Iain De Caestecker has been on the show since the very beginning, so his absence was felt. It makes me wonder if he wanted to move on to other things or if that’s simply how the writers decided to incorporate his character into this season. Either way, it would not have been right to end the show without Fitz appearing again, so it’s nice to see him, even if it’s just in Simmons’ (Elizabeth Henstridge, Ultimate Spider-Man) head.

We learn that Leo and Jemma lived a quiet life together for a time while they were working on the time drive for the Zephyr. This is an interesting concept, the idea that they didn’t have to rush because they were working on a time machine. Sometimes in life it would be nice if time were truly irrelevant. Anyway, we learn that Simmons made a sacrifice. Now she doesn’t even remember who he is. This development is surely sending Fitzsimmons shippers into a frenzy right now. I for one feel like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has jerked us around too much when it comes to their relationship. We’ll get some sort of resolution when it’s all over.

I guess I’ll briefly touch on Daisy’s (Chloe Bennet, Valley Girl) romance with Sousa (Enver Gjokaj, Emergence) since I haven’t addressed it. Romance is not what I watch the show for, but they seem like a nice couple. It’s amusing how he makes fun of her Quake name and how she makes fun of him for being a dork. And it’s nice that the team is there for Daisy and won’t let anyone hurt her.

Speaking of Daisy, the other most important person in her life right now is her sister, Kora (Dianne Doan, Vikings). Kora’s not a well-defined character, so her motivations aren’t clear. At first, it seems like she just couldn’t control her powers, but now she’s a bona fide killer. Her desire to become a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent is all a ruse, and that at least is consistent. Still, she feels less innocent than she should.

Kora confirms the Chronicoms’ changes have created a new timeline. However, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had already existed in a different timeline than the Marvel Cinematic Universe since at least the end of Season 5. But that doesn’t mean the Chronicoms wiping the S.H.I.E.L.D. bases off the map isn’t still chilling. It’s a great way to set up the series finale. It’s not a question of if the world is going to be different at the end, it’s how different. The most important thing is where our heroes end up. One more week till we find out.

Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 7 Episode 11, ‘Brand New Day’ is now streaming on Hulu.
