5. Looney Tunes Cartoons (Season 1) – HBO Max
While most reboots attempt to just ride a nostalgia wave to satisfy old fans while using basic modernizations to reel in new ones, Looney Tunes Cartoons threw all of that aside and decided to deliver an authentic re-entry into the modern era for the iconic property.
The series is actually less of a reboot and more of a return to form as it sees the iconic cast of Looney Tunes return to a variety sketch show format for new adventures. The format isn’t the only way this series does an authentic return to form though, as the animation and designs reflect the series’ old incarnations of the characters and title slates. Daffy Duck (voiced by Eric Bauza) looks and acts more like his maniacally wacky self, a lot of iconic characters feature much bigger eyes and their clothes reflect their original designs, and Bugs Bunny (also voiced by Bauza) even brings back his original yellow gloves. Best of all is the return to classic, unadulterated cartoon violence that made the series so uproariously hilarious, and there isn’t all that much that’s off the table. Wil E. Coyote still has a variety of ACME products backfire in his face; Bugs shows his love for dynamite explosions; and Daffy still loves to put
Porky Pig (voiced by Bob Bergen) in some brutal traps and situations to screw with his day. Even without guns, Looney Tunes Cartoons brings animated violence back to its roots with gut-busting results.
Even better is that this return to form isn’t just barebones nostalgia. It presents a lot of new adventures that fans, old and new, will enjoy. Its cast of modern voice actors maintain the iconic sounds of their respective characters and it’s really something to see the names of iconic talents like Bauza and Tom Kenny on old-school sketch slates that introduce some sketches. Speaking of the sketches, Looney Tunes Cartoons comes packed with plenty of sketches that see iconic characters touch familiar ground in new territory. Bugs has an absolutely hilarious arm-wrestling bout with Yosemite Sam (voiced by Fred Tatasciore), Daffy and Porky have some wild adventures as roommates, firefighters, and tomb raiders, Tweety (also voiced by Bauza) attempts to escape the claws of Sylvester (voiced by Jeff Bergmen), and there’re so many other adventures and characters to enjoy and many more strong possibilities for the future.
Looney Tunes Cartoons is a painstakingly authentic ode to the heyday of Looney Tunes and cartoons as a whole and is the pure definition of putting a fresh coat of paint on a classic.
