The Anniversary Brothers, Aaron and Josh, are here for their February movie podcast, which is on Muppet Treasure Island, for its 25th anniversary.
Muppet Treasure Island came out in theaters on February 16, 1996. Based on the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel, it was directed by Brian Henson. It stars Kevin Bishop as Jim Hawkins, a teenage orphan. Hawkins receives a treasure map from the pirate Billy Bones, played by Billy Connolly, on his death bed. Dave Goelz and Steve Whitmire portray Gonzo and Rizzo the Rat, Jim’s faithful friends. Dave Goelz also portrays Kermit the Frog, who fills in as Captain Abraham Smollet. Frank Oz voices Miss Piggy, who serves as Smollet’s love interest, Benjamina Gunn. Rounding out the cast is Tim Curry, who plays the duplicitous pirate Long John Silver.
The film was generally well-received upon release, but it wasn’t exactly a box office super-hit, grossing $34.3 million. Overall, when compared to previous Muppet films, the box office of Muppet Treasure Island was well in-range.
In the podcast Josh and Aaron discuss the plot of the film, the characters, and the songs. They also go into the production value and their overall thoughts on the Muppets franchise.
