Welcome to This Wrestling Life: A Podcast — the latest addition to The Pop Break’s family of pop culture podcasts.
This episode is Episode 0 aka “the dark match” of the series, which is an introduction of what the concept of This Wrestling Life: A Podcast (which is a bad pun off the This American Life podcast series) is all about.
The episode is hosted by ThePopBreak.com’s editor-in-chief and lifelong wrestling fan Bill Bodkin. (If you couldn’t tell Bill was a wrestling fan — just look at the years of weekly wrestling coverage on the site.) The monthly podcast will be a celebration of fandom as well as a platform to champion wrestlers the hosts and guests feel never got their proper praise.
Each month Bill and his co-host, comedian and Pop Break staff writer Melissa Jouben, will be joined by a special guest ranging from Pop Break staff to wrestling content creators to musicians, pop culture aficionados and (hopefully) people within the world of pro wrestling.
In the opening segment of the episode titled “Coming Down the Aisle” Bill and Melissa will talk to guests about the origins of their wrestling fandom, their first show and give match recommendations based on a theme for the month.
In this episode Bill discusses his 30+ years of love of pro wrestling, how his great grandmother kicked off wrestling fandom in his family, and how wrestling was a way for he and his dad to overcome one of the most difficult times of their relationship during the late ’90s. As for matches recommendations, Bill talks about the must-watch matches from Wrestlemania 37.
In the main event of the podcast titled “If I Had the Pencil” the guest will champion a wrestlers they believe is highly underrated or doesn’t get the love they deserve. The guest will recommend matches for everyone (including the hosts) to watch and their will be a debate about it throughout the episode.
In this episode Bill discusses a man intrinsically tied to so much that happened during last week’s wild Wrestlemania week — Jerry Lynn. While most know him as “The New F’N Show” from Extreme Championship Wrestling, Bill talks about how Jerry Lynn is a vital wrestler due to his intrinsic links to Class of 2020 and Class of 2021 Hall of Famers Sean Waltman (Lightning Kid, 1-2-3 Kid, X-Pac) and Rob Van Damm as well as new RAW Tag Team Champion, “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles. Bill highlights how important Jerry Lynn is to modern wrestling as a coach in All Elite Wrestling as well as his incredibly amazing style that embodied so much drama.
