Scott Snyder (American Vampire, Batman, Dark Knights: Death Metal) penned a personal letter in the back of the issue number one.  He thanks fans for supporting creator-owned books, such as this one, Nocterra. This title is based in a reality of being a parent. Snyder shares the fear his son has of the dark. I can relate, my kids are afraid of the dark as well.  It and this simple childhood fear pave the way for an epic story of a world plunged into eternal darkness.  Of course Scott Snyder would carve a story like this.

Bringing in acclaimed artist Tony S. Daniel (Batman, Detective Comics) along with the talents of Tomeu Morey (Batman, Detective Comics, Gotham City Sirens) and Deron Bennett (Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal, Darkwing Duck, The Telara Chronicles), to tell a tale of a world plagued with the stuff nightmares are made of … In darkness.

Together they created a story by crafting a world where darkness is the norm and survival is part of the daily routine. The main protagonist, Val, is a Ferryman, one who brings her freight of passengers from one safe area to the next, while evading the monsters who inhabit this dangerous planet. Years ago, the sun vanished, without warning or explanation, and the world changed as a result. Being out too long exposed humans, animals, even the plant-life to a violent and horrific mutation into the worst type of monster. It is explained over the years the mutations would mate, creating even more grotesque creatures, likely unimaginable in horror unless seen by your own eyes.

Unless you are Snyder and Daniel. They created this world for its inhabitants to die in. Nocterra is a bold leap into a dark world of survival.

By the end of the book issue, the reader has a fully understanding of life on Earth as we know it. It’s a dangerous place, only to be safe in areas fully lit with lights and generators running non-stop. It is a wild ride into the darkest depths of the unknown. You won’t know what hit you, because you can’t see it.

The worst is yet to come. A stranger with secrets and surprises of his own accuses Val’s latest passenger of the most heinous crime of all. Killing the sun.

Pick up Nocterra. Unless you’re afraid of the dark.

Nocterra #1 – Full Throttle Dark is now available at your local comic book retailer.
