Asbury Jams Interview Series: Easy Honey

One has to wonder what they put in the water down in Charleston, South Carolina. Why the wonder? Well, for the past two weeks I’ve been blown away by two bands from this scene — last week 87 Nights and this week, Easy Honey.

Easy Honey is a guitar-driven four piece with vocals evocative of The Beatles (particularly in the song “Gotta Get Back”) with tinges of Oasis — a combination perfect for a hot summer night at the Jersey Shore. Recently we caught up with the band as they get set to play Asbury Jams at The Wonder Bar tonight.

Easy Honey is (Band Members & Instruments They Play): Selby Austin (guitar and vox), Webster Austin (Bass), Darby McGlone (Guitar & vox) and Charlie Holt (Drums & Vox).

Year We Formed In: 2017

The Story Behind Our Name: We were driving up the Cumberland Plateau, and came up with the name. We later realized the importance of the name as in life, there is really no such thing as easy honey. One has to go through some bee’s and maybe get stung a few times to get to the honey.

Bands That Inspired Our Sound: Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Cat Stevens, Lemonheads, Beatles.

Famous/Awesome Bands We’ve Shared the Stage With: Flipturn, Boy Named Banjo, Stop Light Observations.

Scrolling through your social media, almost all of your posts are about hitting the road and touring. How much has playing away from your home base of Charleston upped your game as performers?

We love playing live. It has been such a difference maker in not only our live performance, but overall tightness and togetherness as a band. We started as a band that focused on live performance and continue to make it a staple of the Easy Honey experience.

Last week we interviewed 87 Nights, also out of Charleston. Can you talk about this music scene — is this a thriving music scene? How has it shaped you guys as a band?

The Charleston music scene has been great. There are hardworking bands and avid fans/ concertgoers in the city. We fully believe Charleston will be the next hub of great bands/musicians (like a new Brooklyn).

Obviously, the past two years changed everything for the music world. How did the past two years change your approach to music — whether it’s writing, recording, performing, etc.?

We were able to hone in on several aspects of our game during the down time. Obviously it was not ideal, but we made the best of it. We were seemingly first on the scene with doing live streams with the help of our friends at Downstream Media and Atlas Touring. Those first few live streams were exciting times.

If someone wanted come out to Asbury Jams at Wonder Bar to hear you guys play – what song of yours would you suggest they “pre-game” with (listen to before they come to the show) in order to fully get what Easy Honey is all about?

“Gotta Get Back.”

You guys are currently touring the country — what’s been one of your favorite experiences on the road so far?

We have loved playing New York City. It is a really electric experience for us, this time headlining the Mercury Lounge.

What are you most excited about for the band in 2022?

We are releasing several singles that we feel is the best music we have made to date. We will also be announcing a fall tour, headlining cities in TX and CO.

Easy Honey performs tonight at Asbury Jams at The Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, New Jersey with Garcia Peoples. Tickets are $10.
