Review: Cobra Commander # 4 (Image Comics)

As good ol’ Jim Ross would say, “Business has just picked up!”

Quite so in both the figurative and literal sense for our Cobra-La exiled Commander. As the Ol’ Snake continues to slither around the Everglades while the recently unleashed Nemesis Enforcer continues to decimate the ranks of the Dreadnoks, we dive further into the intrigue which is pivotal in its service to the Energon Universe.

This issue provides a direct connection to Energon itself, the primary source of energy for the Transformers, and at the very end of the comic, a major connection with the ongoing events in the Duke miniseries, and the inevitable clash with Earth’s new friends from Cybertron. Or enemies.

A somewhat shocking swerve takes place after the Nemesis Enforcer finishes his annihilation of the Dreadnoks and Cobra Commander’s discovery of a new energy source, it is the Enforcer, who with the bluntness of a brick to the skull, turns to his real mission. A mission in which Cobra Commander is not supposed to return from. An epic fight breaks out and with a timely secret in the literal hand of our beloved snake, an insect-looking tool for the sinister Commander is revealed in order to maintain supremacy and control.

There is a whole lot of death, and more tense altercations where it seems someone or something may fracture, but the uneasy alliances somehow stay intact. The final page reveals the next stop on Cobra Commander’s journey.

While keeping in mind, no one has actually called him this by name… Or any name for that matter.

If the first four issues are of any indication, the final issue of the miniseries will likely see crossover with Duke, and ultimately integration into the larger Energon Universe which include Void Rivals and Transformers.

Thoughts on the lead-in to what will likely be an epic confrontation in the not-so-near future?
