“His name is Zorak… And if he is free… Then the whole galaxy is in danger.”
We’ve been waiting since Issue #1. At least I have. After months of saying his name, he finally appears. Zorak. Not a version from Space Ghost’s comedy sidekick from a late-night talk show, but as villainous as Jonathan Lau and Andrew Dalhouse make him appear. This is no spoiler folks, as the Previews solicits and the tease at the end of last issue revealed, Zorak has arrived in the Dynamite universe. Variant covers by Jae Lee and June Chung, and another by Michael Cho also feature our insectoid enemy.
As seems to be the theme of the series thus far, these are obviously not the characters from Space Ghost Coast to Coast, nor are these the campy villains of the week from Space Stars. The arrival of Zorak appears to accelerate the debut of more criminals such as Titanor.
This issue gets right to the point. Space Ghost appears to fear Zorak. I will not say more as to risk spoilers, but it sets the tone of things to come. Jan and Jace have an adventure of their own, with an outcome terrifying to fathom.
Again, I do not wish to spoil anything major, but in order to stress how much this issue feels like a pivotal turning point, I will say this: David Pepose has made Zorak into a top tier nemesis. He’s made the creature damn frightening. Take the campy stuff of yesteryear and file it under cheerful nostalgia. This is the Zorak made from nightmares.
These guys must get exhausted. The artwork and writing completely tops the previous three issues. Don’t know how they do it. Pepose, Lau, Dalhouse, Esposito, and Rybrandt have outdone themselves in crafting the ultimate Space Ghost saga. It is clear this is going to escalate very quickly for S.G. and company. The question is, will they continue to go at it alone?
