Review: Space Ghost #5 (Dynamite Comics)

David Pepose and Jonathan Lau are at it again in Space Ghost #5!

Following up from the horrifying cliffhanger from the last issue, we find Space Ghost on a Mad Dash to rescue his adopted children where is in the past, Jace and Jan might have been able to outwit their captors, this time around there is no such reprieve.

Zorak, in the thralls of his own Spiritual Awakening, does not seem to pay any attentiveness or concern that his plans may doom himself and his cult following.

As a side note, it speaks volumes when a leader doesn’t seem to care for his own well-being or for the well-being of his followers.

It’s a painstaking truth which has echoed throughout history, it says though the blind leads the blind. it makes for some great storytelling, and for some great reimagining of a classic villain turned comedy sidekick turned nefarious villain once more. the action picks up with such ferocity and intensity, I wasn’t really sure if anyone would make it out alive.

Obviously we know someone has to survive otherwise the series would come to an abrupt end, however I genuinely had a feeling that this issue was the turning point.

Without spoiling too much, it’s safe to say the series will continue but the status quo has been changed. I really enjoyed what they did with Zorak. Instead of some comical villain, he has been reimagined as a dedicated disciple, bringing death and destruction with Reckless abandon.

My one complaint is this story arc could have been delayed by a few more issues to build the suspense, or expanded with one or two more issues before moving on. Being as this is my only detraction, overall the storytelling and execution in which this current dilemma meets resolution is absolutely phenomenal.

The written story is well done, and as always I have to gush about the artwork. I hope Pepose and Lau do not ban me for including one panel in the preview column,  but the scene where space goes turns around I swear, you can see his cape moving in a swirling motion. there is another panel later on which looks very similar to something I’ve seen from a Spider-Man or Batman comic but that I will not spoil, and let you loyal readers find out on your own.

I have really been enjoying this reimagined tale of Space Ghost, a character whom I finally grew up with as a kid, during the Space Stars era. For those who only know these characters from the comedy show Space Ghost Coast to Coast, I truly hope you enjoy what Dynamite has been publishing for you today.

Space Ghost #5 is now available at your local comic book shop.
