HomeBooksPreview: Space Ghost #9 (Dynamite Comics)

Preview: Space Ghost #9 (Dynamite Comics)

Talk about a sprint, the battle for the Galactic Federation homeworld is fast and furious.  it’s funny, I’m going to make a similar reference from a previous comic book review, but Michael Bay would have enjoyed this. bright, colorful explosions filled the majority of the panels on almost every page while the hordes of Metallus  continued to lay Siege, destroying everything in a brutal fashion.

The issue is a run-through of violence, explosions, and our heroes overcoming odds in an impossible situation.

Listing my favorite parts of the issue:

#1 is the cover by Francesco Mattina – Typically our hero Space Ghost graces the cover as the main attraction in some fashion,  however this time around his arch-nemesis dominates the cover holding a mauled mask. gives a very dreadful aura of things to come. Second, The artwork by Jonathan Lau and colorist Andrew Dalhouse manage to  give the illusion of movement with each panel. There is a panel where Space Ghost grabs one of his foes and I swear if you look at it at an angle it  appears his arm is moving. There’s another panel where a giant mechanoid spider crashes into view and it feels like debris is flying everywhere. I guess I just have a pretty vivid imagination. Major kudos to letterer, Taylor Esposito, who conveys the dire crisis and urgency from all of our heroes, including blip. The third I liked most is the seemingly terrible transition of watching our hero become a violent, vengeful, vicious being. There are panels interwoven showing how important family is to our hero and the result when family is taken and threatened. I imagine us readers may also feel this way. A panel which looks like it’s ripped right from The Dark Knight Returns as Space Ghost armors up and unleashes fury on his foe.

My one negative, which I believe I alluded to in my previous review, is I wish some of these story arcs would go more than one or two issues. I feel the big fight could have gone into a third issue since there seem to be a lot to work with. well I understand the need for resolution to pave the way closer for The appearance of the Council of doom, I would have liked for one  issue to Teeter on the brink of failure. it would have evoked more of an emotional investment.

I feel my prediction is inevitable, as it seems the build towards a grander story arc is nearing. If the story and art continue as it stands, I anticipate some pretty Epic showdowns in the next few months.
