This weekend is curated by The ShowRoom and Alex Biese, a longtime musician (who’ll also be performing) and journalist who’s covered the Asbury Park scene for over 20 years.
“I’ve been honored to be part of the Asbury Park music scene for more than 20 years, and many of these artists are folks I have had the privilege to call peers and friends over the years,” said Biese, who also writes for Pop Break.
“Their work covers a wide range of styles and vibes, and taken altogether I think they paint a pretty great picture of what some of the city sounds like today.”
Biese enlightened us that the screenings of the 20th Century Films produced film starring Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen at The ShowRoom is a little bit of kismet.
“[The ShowRoom is] also located across the street from the former location of The Upstage, where Bruce and the E Street band first began to gel together, so this is the perfect place for the city to celebrate the Boss’ history.”
Deliver Me From Nowhere was filmed in and around New Jersey — in particular Springsteen’s hometown of Freehold, and of course, in Asbury Park with scenes filmed at the legendary Stone Pony. The film also stars Jeremy Strong (Succession), Paul Walter Hauser (Fantastic Four: First Steps), Marc Maron (WTF with Marc Maron), Stephen Graham (Adolescence), Odessa Young (Black Rabbit), David Krumholtz (Numbers) and Johnny Cannizzaro (who’s interview will appear on Monday on Pop Break). The film documents the making of Springsteen’s post-Born to Run record, Nebraska.
“With Asbury Park being one of America’s great music cities, it was only natural for us to celebrate one of our native sons on this momentous occasion,” said series co-curator, musician and journalist Alex Biese. “For more than 50 years Bruce has brought the sound of Asbury Park to the world. Now it’s time for the local scene to celebrate him.”
