The story trailer for Insomniac’s Wolverine game has finally dropped. With appearances from Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, and The Hand, there’s much to anticipate. Both Victor Creed and Yuriko Oyama play crucial parts in Logan’s past, which the game seems to hint at exploring.
The trailer also included Sentinels and Jean Grey, longtime love interest of Wolverine. However, the creators also confirmed that the X-Men do not exist in this universe. It’s puzzling how this could work given how much the X-Men contribute to Wolverine’s history. Jean Grey and the Sentinels are also heavily associated with the X-Men, so the exclusion of the premiere mutant hero team is a bit concerning.
While they are using Team X to give Logan the history of being on a team, Team X does not compare to the straight-edge nature of the X-Men and wouldn’t provide the same development for Logan. Team X will consist of Sabretooth and Mystique, two mutants notorious for their less-than-heroic antics.
Hopefully, the game can make up for it by exploring Wolverine’s connections in Japan. The SDCC panel confirmed that the Hand will lead Wolverine back to Japan. Fans of Insomniac’s Spiderman games might welcome the change of scenery, and fans of Wolverine will relish in the acknowledgment of Logan’s adventures in Japan.
Liam McIntrye’s voice works perfectly for Logan in the trailer, and seeing him on the panel show’s he’s got the look in real life as well. Both he and Krizia Bajos as Jean Grey were great voice acting choices for this game, already carrying so much emotion in the short story trailer.
Despite some questionable narrative decisions so far, the game is shaping up to be spectacular regardless. The game is currently available for pre-order and releases on September 15th of this year, with the soundtrack releasing on August 28th.
