At 73, most musical icons are slowing down. However, Danny Elfman spent the night shirtless, showing off his tattoos and singing like a punk-rock rebel! Stepping inside the historic walls of the Met in Philadelphia, fans didn’t get the experience of Elfman’s outdoor orchestra shows of late.
Instead, the fans were treated to a sweaty, chaotic, and beautifully loud indoor show. Elfman proved that his roots remain firmly planted in the fierce, avant-garde energy that made him a legend. Looking around the room, some fans went goth, and others embraced a “Halloween came early” aesthetic. There were a lot of fans dressed in black clothing, leather jackets, and heavy eyeliner. Classic Oingo Boingo tees mixed with combat boots and colorful outfits, while some fans paid tribute to The Nightmare Before Christmas in pinstriped jackets and clothing channeling Jack Skellington or Beetlejuice.
The show opened up with a song off his recent solo work called “Sorry.” The setlist was the perfect mix of unreleased and brand-new tracks from his upcoming album. For his long-time fans, they must have been thrilled to hear nine Oingo Boingo classics played throughout the night. This really felt like a special night. The performance leaned heavily into raw rock-and-roll power. Danny Elfman assembled a phenomenal band featuring Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters), Robin Finck (Nine Inch Nails, Guns N’ Roses), Matt McJunkins (A Perfect Circle), and Nili Brosh (DethKlok). This powerhouse backing band brought a level of prowess and explosive energy that elevated an already brilliant show.
The visuals during the set were stunning, especially on songs like “Dead Man’s Party,” “Insects” and “Just Another Day.” They were displayed on massive LED screens, with videos and animations playing behind the band. The show’s imagery came to life on a giant LED video wall. Between that, colorful lighting and the projections, it was total sensory overload, but in a good way.
One of the best moments of the night was when Elfman, in a perfect tribute to The Nightmare Before Christmas, slipped into a classic pinstripe jacket right before performing “This is Halloween.” He was paying homage to Jack Skellington. It was an incredibly nostalgic moment for lifelong fans. Other songs that stood out were “Kick Me,” “Happy,” “Ain’t This the Life,” “On the Outside,” “The River of Life,” and “No One Lives Forever.”
He encored with “Who Do You Want To Be.” Before leaving the stage, Elfman told the crowd he hadn’t played the area in a long time. He did so with his band Oingo Boingo at the East Side Club in Philly. As he left the stage, he said, “Let’s not take another 45 years to see each other again!” The crowd cheered.
Elfman’s live rock show proved he is still a highly regarded powerhouse on stage, but his legacy goes way beyond being a killer performer. In Hollywood, he is an icon for his legendary movie scores, including Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, and Spider-Man, and he also wrote the theme song for The Simpsons. Not too shabby to have had four Oscar nods, among other awards. Catching him live tonight wasn’t just a regular concert. It was a masterclass from a true pop culture legend.
