After tons of rumors and a slew of other Marvel-related news, the Friday panel for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. at San Diego Comic-Con revealed via short video that Ghost Rider is indeed part of Season 4.
Speculation started weeks prior when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s Twitter shared photos of a light rail train sporting a fiery chain below the series’ logo. While some people instantly thought Ghost Rider, others dismissed it, saying that the image merely alluded to Hellfire (Axle Whitehead), an Inhuman introduced in Season 3 who has conjured up a similar flaming chain-whip as a weapon before and who has been a member of the Secret Warriors in the comics.
The announcement at SDCC and the image released on Twitter have now proved that theory wrong.
The report from Comic Book Resources states that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will forego using the most popular iteration of the character, Johnny Blaze, who was previously portrayed in two films by Nicolas Cage, in favor of utilizing the MARVEL NOW! version, Robbie Reyes. In the comics, Reyes is a high school student bonded with the Spirit of Vengeance who drives a black Dodge Charger instead of a motorcycle. The decision is similar to how the Cinematic Universe features the Ultimate version of Nick Fury.
Actor Gabriel Luna will play Reyes.
All of this is sure to change things even more, after the last few minutes of Season 3’s finale shattered the series’ status quo.
Season 4 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which began filming yesterday, will premiere Tuesday September 20 at 10 PM on ABC.
