Notable Openings This Weekend: Jason Bourne, Bad Moms, Nerve
Alright, everybody calm down. I know we all celebrated the demise of Ice Age with an all time franchise low opening weekend of just over $21 Million. Here’s the deal – according to Box Office Mojo, the production budget is $105 Million. Worldwide gross is currently over $210 Million. Yeah. We may actually get a sixth Ice Age movie. Will that squirell ever catch his damn nut?! Unbelievable. That’s the most I’ve ever talked about the Ice Age franchise, so enough. It’s all about the return of Bourne this weekend. The real Bourne. Can you remember a time when everybody universally rejected a spin-off like they did with Bourne Legacy? Matt Damon is the only Bourne. How will he do? Let’s discuss.
This is a movie at the beginning of the summer I thought had monster potential. The buzz has seemed to die down, and the “eh” reviews aren’t helping. Believe it or not, it’s been nine years since the last true Bourne movie. Yeah. I couldn’t believe it myself. Bourne was certainly a popular franchise, but it’s been a long time. As we’ve learned this summer, big gaps between movies aren’t necessarily a good thing (*cough* Independence Day *cough*). Bourne certainly has a much better pedigree than ID4 though. While I don’t think it will blow up the box office like I thought it might, with a production budget of $120 Million (Box Office Mojo), Bourne and the gang will be just fine. There’s definitely still a hunger there.
Aside from Central Intelligence (you people make me sick), it hasn’t been great for comedies. It also hasn’t been a disaster. Bad Moms will come and go. It won’t shock the world, but the moms will make the money they need to make. Another “whatever comedy” coming our way. Yay.
The last wide release we have is Nerve. It’s one of those “let’s release it mid-week” movies. This is actually a cool premise, and the timing is lucky considering how Pokémon Go has taken off, which this movie is sort of akin too. They clearly dumped this though, as there’s been almost no marketing. It won’t make the top five.
HOW WILL IT ALL BREAK DOWN…
Jason Bourne has a workmanlike opening and breaks $50 Million, which is what it needs to do. If Damon and co want to make another one, they’ll most likely have that option. Even though Star Trek Beyond did okay, not great, it should have a relatively small drop off due to good word of mouth.
1. Jason Bourne – $52 Million
2. Star Trek Beyond – $31.5 Million
3. Bad Moms – $19 Million
4. The Secret Life of Pets – $16 Million
5. Lights Out – $12.5 Million
