I wish this show was as bullet-proof as the title character was.
Netflix is back at it with its latest “marvel” (pun intended) and boy was it a good season…until that finale.
I was Luke-warm (alright, I’ll try and stop with the puns) when it came to the idea of a Luke Cage show, as he didn’t make much of a lasting impression in Jessica Jones, in which he was introduced. Well, I’m happy to say I have been converted.
The season was truly something to behold, giving us the perfect balance of action, drama, comedy, and just really good writing. It was as if this show could do no wrong, albeit a bit of some dull moments, but all in all it made the record books for being one of the best shows around proving that Netflix and Marvel still got it when it comes to the superhero game…as if that was a question.
However, this finale really made me second guess all my praise for a series that made me want to go out and buy a bullet hole sweatshirt and rock out to some sweet jazz.
While the season finales for the past two Netflix/Marvel team ups have been some of the strongest episodes in TV history, this one fell flat and really missed a few punches.
While usually the big fights are saved for the last minutes of the episode, to give the show some excitement, this one started with it and it wasn’t even that impressive.
Basically it was two dudes fighting…I can go watch that on a Saturday night at any bar if that’s all I wanted.
Daredevil and Jessica Jones gave thrills and chills to their fight scenes, I mean that fight between Fisk and The Man Without Fear is one of the best things I have ever witnessed on my laptop, and Kilgrave (David Tennant) is still my favorite villain in the Marvelverse, but the fight between Cage (Mike Colter) and Diamondback (Erik Laray Harvey) really just didn’t do it for me in terms of great Marvel fights.
Even Diamondback as a villain left me wanting more and there was a lot that could have been done that just simply wasn’t touched in terms of plot and writing. However, this is a character closely following after the likes of Fisk and Kilgrave so I’m not sure if I’m biased or not.
All in all, it really felt as if the finale for this season was just a filler episode for season three of Daredevil or The Defenders premiere.
Luke Cage deserved better than the finale that was bestowed upon him. Yes, a second season for him will be after Iron Fist and Defenders most likely so I understand the desire to set those two shows up, but it was like they gave fans nothing to look forward to in terms of a second season for him as an individual.
It wasn’t a complete dumpster fire though, the acting and music still held the show up, but it just didn’t leave me craving more but instead made me think, “Hmm, wonder when next season of Daredevil is coming.”
FINALE RATING: 4 OUT OF 10
