New Girl’s flash forward season is already moving along nicely, as we find both Jess (Zoey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson) facing obstacles at their respective jobs. Jess struggling to make headway at her new job was unexpected but interesting. Nick’s now lovey-dovey personal life affecting his Pepperwood character. As a result, we’re in for some classic New Girl fun as the boys (and a little lady) help Nick creatively, while Cece (Hannah Simone) and Jess team up to conquer their male-dominated professions.
All of the Three Men and a Baby/Three Men and a Little Lady references from Winston (Lamorne Morris) and the gang were gold. “I used to think Nick was the Guttenberg but he may be the little lady,” line from Winston pretty much summed up the episode. Nick’s childish banter with Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece’s daughter, Ruth was great. “No you’re the diarea- head” from Nick to the three year had me chuckling. Although we’ve just met her, Ruth’s fitting into the series nicely. The mini-rivalry between her and Nick for Schmidt’s affection is also fun. “Before you, I was his baby girl,” Nick explains.
As always, the quick flashbacks are just funny and brilliant. They also help as a storytelling device in this second episode of the flash-forward season. I was nervous about another flash-forward in a popular series, but so far the show is two for two. I can’t complain.
Cece wins this episode for a few reasons. We see another flashback where she is using the breast pump at a meeting, and says, “It’s a breast pump, Ken. I sent you the time to pump, and you refused to change the meeting so….here we are.” The awkward looks on her co-workers faces were priceless. Also Cece is now dealing with motherhood and sleepless nights. She adjusts by trying several combinations of wine, coffee, and sugar to keep her going. “I am drunk right now and VERY awake.” Hilarious.
Ultimately, we see Jess and Nick overcome their obstacles at work. We knew they would. Nothing too crazy going on this episode as it focused mainly on the comedy and the characters. As it should. No mention of the loft being taken over by new management so we’ll have to see where that goes next week. With only six more episode of the series remaining, New Girl is right where it needs to be. My hopes and expectations for an EPIC series finale are very high.
