Unicron. A name which should instill fear in the same manner the name of Thanos should inspire dread. I would have added Darksied, but he seems a bit lower down the powerhouse ladder lately. Whereas Thanos would snap his fingers to erase existence, Unicron simply devours all in his path. This might have been a spoiler as Optimus Prime has been delayed, but it seems Unicron has already arrived and worlds have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
ROM has returned, and so has some other figures from the past, so one can assume these events will take place in Optimus Prime #21 which will be released later this week. My biggest problem off the bat, is how much differs from what is contained in Optimus Prime. Granted, IDW has been a bit behind and making efforts to move things along for this and Lost Light to catch up to Unicron.
We plunge right into an epic battle. Teams are put into play, and it is clear this one is for all the marbles. We’ve got characters like Starscream who will not sit idly by and let someone else orchestrate his future. Prime attempts to gain an advantage, and knowledge about their foe, and a whole world of pain and destruction awaits.
IDW is serious. When they say the current Transformers universe is coming to an end, they mean it.
Unicron #1 gets an 8 out of 10
A ton of variant covers were produced for this issue. It’s cool and all to get that treatment, but man, those things get pricey. Take this cover, which is an homage to Issue #1 of the original series produced by Marvel Comics, and this special cover exclusive to Stadium Comics, which is a nod to the movie poster for the animated 1986 feature film.
