Comic Review: Lois Lane #4

Lois Lane #4 (of 12) is published by DC Comics. It is written by Greg Rucka with art by Mike Perkins and colors by Paul Mounts.

Mike Perkins and Paul Mounts have perfected this style of colorful detective noir. What I mean is, it feels like an old school detective-mystery, but it’s in color. It’s actually really colorful, but also the colors are dull and faded, like it’s old even though it’s new. So, yeah, very noir.

Can I just say what a great mother-son relationship Lois and Jon have? Seriously. It’s adorable. This was such a great issue for some light exploration of their relationship given he’s about to join the Legion of Super-Heroes and therefore will be in the future saving the future world. I think my favorite thing about this is that Lois compares it to a parent sending their child off to college. She’s so used to this super family life that it doesn’t even strike her as out of the ordinary. It was such a perfect reaction, for her to just hug him, remind him she loves him, tell him how proud she is, and let her son go off to become the great man she knows he’ll become. It’s quite moving to read.

So, we have this quaint change of pace for Lois, meanwhile, Renee is at breakfast, trying to wrap her head around the fact that Vic Sage, the original Question and her mentor who died in her arms (or so she thought) is alive and well. We sadly don’t get the story on what happened to Vic –hopefully it’s something we come back to – we do get quite an interesting speech about truth from Lois to Renee, who now demands to know everything. The question (heh) is, can she handle? I would give that a solid, “most likely” for the answer. Renee isn’t easily shaken and right now, she is probably the most determined she’s ever been to understand what’s actually going on.

It’s not an action-y issue, but it’s an important, developmental one. We get some great Lois/Jon moments and honestly, I really liked the point Lois made about the truth and why she keeps so much of it to herself. Big props to Greg Rucka for that.

OVERALL SCORE: 8.5 / 10
