Trasnformers ’84 Secrets & Lies 2 finds the remaining Transformers on Cybertron now vie for control over resources while we watch how that fateful battle amongst an asteroid field unfolds. Once again, the intricate tale of some of the original Autobot heroes and Decepticon villains play out in ways unexpected, as told by our Autobot/Decepticon double-agent.
Simon Furman continues to weave a web of intrigue while Guido Guidi and Jean-Paul Bove blow us away with classic-yet-vibrant art and colors.
It is interesting to see almost a reverse-development of characters, seeing an unknown origin story come to light which adds to what we remember of some beloved characters, such as the Dinobots who unfortunately met a grizzly fate last issue.
This issue features many appearances of Transformers whom we did not see until much later and under some puzzling circumstance. Furman irons all those out here, while also nodding to many of the UK characters and stories which were not easily available in the US until much later through trade paperbacks.
I enjoy most of all, there are no retcons and no skittish do-overs. The prime grail of the original story remains intact, what is new are stories leading up to how many characters would ultimately be discovered or appear. Rather than “Oh, they we’re just buried there after a battle,” we now see said battle and events leading up to it.
It might be the nostalgia factor, but I am truly enjoying this series.
