Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here for their latest TV retrospective. This time they’re chatting about Cowboy Bebop for its 25th anniversary.
Cowboy Bebop is a science fiction anime created by the animation studio Sunrise. It premiered in Japan on April 3, 1998. It debuted in the U.S. on September 2, 2001, during Adult Swim’s launch. The series ended its 26-episode run in Japan on April 24, 1999.
The show follows a group of bounty hunters traversing space in the year 2071. The crew consists of Spike Spiegel (Steve Blum), Faye Valentine (Wendee Lee), Jet Black (Beau Billingslea), Edward Wong (Melissa Fahn), and Ein the Corgi (Koichi Yamadera). As the series progresses, it reveals more about their pasts.
Widely considered one of the greatest anime of all time, the show’s English dub by Animaze is regarded as one of the best anime localizations. A film featuring an additional storyline saw a theatrical release in 2001. A live-action Netflix series premiered in 2021, which Netflix canceled after one season.
Aaron and Josh discuss their initial impressions of Cowboy Bebop before going into its first episode. They also talk about the show’s characters, animation, mix of genres, and watching in Japanese versus watching in English.
