Move over Space Ghost, someone else takes the spotlight this month! Is it Jace and his technical wizardry? Is it Jan and her no-nonsense approach to conflict?
No! It’s BLIP!
Blip the freakin’ monkey.
You might think this is taking a campy turn like the old cartoons, but this is anything but campy. There is a nice little nod to the inability to understand the brilliant creature early on. It’s a fun standalone issue. Readers are initially seeing it from an unknown perspective, thoughts and speech from an unknown source until our vision clears and see utter hell breaking loose. Thoughts panic and a rush of adrenaline kick in and off we go into another planetary conflict. This month’s villain-of-the-week is The Creature King, a telepathic fellow who has empower creature and animals of all sorts to wield their power and fight back against any and all oppressors. While their initial intent sounds defensible, it quickly becomes a fight for survival for Space Ghost and company.
However, as the issue progresses, it’s clear S.G. along with Jace and Jan are struggling with their own humanity. Speech, becoming difficult. Thoughts, more primal. Yet once of their crew is not affected, yet seemingly now able to effectively communicate.
Blip becomes the star of the issue, in more ways than one. Not just with survival instincts kicking in, but with David Pepose manifesting some really thoughtful dialogue for a creature who up until now could not effectively communicate as well, suddenly now gets express and hell of a lot more than one would think.
Reader must wonder with these abilities and enhancements on display, if these creatures are more aware of things than we know. Yes, the premise is that Blip is some sort of super-genius creature, but it appears not just in smarts, but with empathy and dare I say it, humanity.
It’s a fun standalone issue. It gives a lot more depth into a previously underutilized character who has been seen, but not heard from thus far. It shows how every member of the team is valuable, no matter what.
