Dream Productions, part of the Inside Out universe, is a four-episode limited mini-series that dives straight into the magical (and occasionally chaotic) world of how Riley’s (voiced by Kensington Tallman) dreams come to life. And let’s say it’s as whimsical, emotional, and downright hilarious as any Disney and Pixar fan would hope.

Right out of the gate, this show draws in the need to watch every moment. Every joke lands, every heartfelt moment builds up to pack a punch, and it’s all wrapped up in animation so gorgeous it feels unfair to other TV spin-offs. Too many movie-to-TV specials often lose the high quality animation by forgoing some of the very specific details, but Dream Productions adds even the tiniest of details to make this movie quality, just like the two Inside Out films.

Dream Productions could easily light up a cinema screen. The Emotions — who are essentially inner monologues personified — capture the messy, beautiful, and painfully relatable struggles of being human. Fear of irrelevance? Check. The dread of not being”up with the times?” Check. And who better to lead us through this delightful mayhem than Paula Persimmon (voiced by Paula Pell)? What was once just a tiny cameo in Inside Out is now the backbone of an entire series, and boy, does she deliver.

She’s the behind-the-scenes wizard of Riley’s dream’s even when certain things don’t go as planned. Paula’s struggles feel real, her wins feel earned, and she’s got more heart than most live-action protagonists. It’s fascinating to see how the show pulls back the curtain on the dream-making process, showing viewers a whole new dimension of what can be Riley’s psyche beyond the core Emotions.

Dream Productions achieves something Inside Out and Inside Out 2 never did. While the cameras are mainly on Paula, Dream Productions takes someone who could have been kept as the main background character and turns her into a star in her subconscious. It gives Riley a chance to do something she truly wants to do and not have the Emotions add their influence to it — granted the two films didn’t need to do this, as the journey the core Emotions go on is the main focus and they had no way of allowing Riley to choose her path without the Emotions’ influence.

The lucid dream sequence is the moment where Riley takes the stage. Unlike the films, where Riley is more of a narrative backdrop, Dream Productions puts her front and center. Riley is no longer a canvas for the core Emotions, but she’s now her own person — a teenager navigating her own choices and quirks, a.k.a. how to dress for a school dance and if she should even go. The rare, beautiful glimpse of how Riley’s inner world comes full circle, and it’s also a touching reminder of how much they’ve grown to understand her.

But here’s the thing: as much as this mini-series format is loved, one can’t help but wonder what Dream Productions might have been like as a full-length movie — combing the episodes into one film. TV episodes give viewers the freedom to take breaks, sure, but they also risk losing that all-important emotional momentum. If someone binges this show (and yes, they’ll want to), the character arcs hit harder, the stakes feel higher, and the emotional payoff is so much sweeter. A movie might have amplified all of that, making Dream Productions even more of an emotional roller-coaster.

Yes, Dream Productions works as is, and it deserves all the review love it can get, but why not have a third movie? Let’s make Inside Out a trilogy. The show’s stakes are movie level high, and it would be the best way to end the year, seeing Dream Productions in theaters.

Of course, no Inside Out TV spin-off would be complete without bringing in new details that might be easily missed but bring up so many questions. With Paula and Xeni (voiced by Richard Ayoade, The Watch) clashing during one of the most important dream productions, they create a never-before-seen issue. The fallout? Riley sleepwalking in the real world while the core Emotions are losing their minds back at headquarters.

Cue the next day with Paula and Xeni needing to face the consequences. Their boss Jean (voiced by Maya Rudolph, Hubie Hallowen) of course screams, but there’s a small moment that’s actually larger than what it seems: her sarcastic remark about “other studios” and Riley’s dad having a flying dream, complete with a dry, “Do you even know how much that costs?” It’s the kind of line that’s not just funny — it’s world-building gold. Suddenly, everyone’s left wondering: Can emotions from different people actually communicate? If so, what does that mean for the Inside Out universe? Let’s cross our fingers and hope this doesn’t just stay a limited series. Hopefully with its success, there will be episodes to dive into this mind-bending concept.

And speaking of future episodes, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. Dream Productions is a limited series, but it’s screaming for a second season. With Inside Out 2 on the minds of many, there’s so much potential to bring in the new core Emotions and explore how they gel with the dream crew. Would they join Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler) and Sadness (voiced by Phyllis Smith, The Office) in watching and becoming invested in the dreams? Or, how will they navigate another possible dream crisis? The possibilities are endless, and the sleepwalking disaster should just be the beginning. This show is begging for a sequel. Disney, if you’re listening, we’re ready for more.

In the end, Dream Productions is a love letter to the Inside Out universe. It’s funny, heartfelt, visually stunning, and packed with so much charm that viewers will want to watch it twice. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the original movie or just someone looking for a feel-good show with some emotional depth, this is one dream you won’t want to wake up from.

Dream Productions is now streaming on Disney+
