Icelandic rock powerhouse KALEO brought their A/B 10th Anniversary Tour to Philly and played to packed house at the Fillmore on 8/5, proving exactly why their multi-platinum album remains a timeless force.
The show opened up with irish singer-songwriter Darren Kiely. Warming up for a band like Kaleo seems like a hard task but Kiely made it seem easy. Blending his infectious melodies of contemporary pop and folk, the crowd was immediately engaged. Instead of milling around waiting for Kaleo, the crowd seemed captivated by his set. He had some fans of his own in the crowd and they sang passionately along to some of the songs. It didn’t hurt that he had a beautiful powerful voice.
Kiely’s personality shone through during the set. He won the crowd over with his charisma. He was armed with a charming stage presence and a quick wit. He talked to the crowd between songs. He’s also a natural storyteller. You could feel the energy boost he gave the Fillmore on songs that were emotionally charged and forged a powerful connection with the audience. He definitely set the tone for what would be a memorable night of music.
From the moment the lights dimmed, the visual aesthetic perfectly matched the bands identity. The stage was drenched in a smoky haze, illuminated by moody dark amber tones and deep blues. It was a deliberate choice so it didn’t distract the crowd from the actual performance so they could appreciate frontman JJ Julious Son‘s unique gravelly textured sound. The band opened up with “Still Good” and the band locked into a 18-song setlist. Early on, the band’s musical prowess was on full display, with individuals stepping into the spotlight to showcase their impressive chops.
This enthusiastic Philadelphia crowd was fully engaged, shifting between the explosive songs and the pin-drop ones. During stripped-down haunting ballads like “All the Pretty Girls,” “Save Yourself,” and the agonizingly beautiful “I Can’t Go On Without You,” the crowd hung onto every word. When the band pivoted to their foot-stomping anthems, the energy turned electric.
Tracks like “Hot Blood” and “USA Today” had the floor moving but it was “No Good” that pushed the night into overdrive as the second the crowd recognized the heavy rumbling basslines and opening notes, a loud roar went through the buiding. Delivering the lyrics with an almost preacher-like intensity, JJ Julious Son commanded the room as the audience clapped along, making it the ultimate main-set closer.
The band returned for a highly anticipated encore. KALEO delivered a soaring rendition of their global monster hit “Way Down We Go,” before finally sending the crowd out into the night with a blistering blues-infused “Rock n Roller” finish. I knew the expectations for this special show was incredibly high. Mission accomplished. They delivered a memorable performance that will resonate with Philly fans for a long time to come.
