Notable Openings This Weekend: Godzilla, Million Dollar Arm
ROOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAARRRRR! ROOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAARRR! No, that’s not the sound of Godzilla. That’s the sound of audiences leaving the theater after seeing the Roland Emmerich helmed version of the classic green scaled monster back in 1998. Yes, 16 years later, we’ll finally be able to wash that awful Matthew Broderick version out of our mouths. We’ve waited a long time. Will this Godzilla be amazing? Maybe. Even if it’s not though, the film is already better than that previous piece of Godzilla-sized crap just by the mere fact that it exists. But enough about crappy movies from the nineties, let’s live in the now as we break down this weekend’s box office.
All in all, Godzilla should do pretty darn well. It better make its money fast though, because there’s a certain mutant themed movie opening next week, but we’ll get to that when the time comes. The film has been marketed very well, the trailers kick ass, and while there’s been some early nitpicking and kvetching, reviews and buzz have been pretty good overall. We’re looking at a very strong opening weekend that I’m sure will get a sequel green lit before you can say Mothra.
But wait, there’s more! Disney has to enter the fray this weekend as well with a schmaltzy sports movie. I guess this is for the family crowd whose parents think their kids are too young for Godzilla. Million Dollar Arm should have opened at the start of baseball season, or during playoff time. This is right in the middle of the baseball doldrums where nobody really cares. It will do fine, but whatever.
How Will It All Break Down…
Godzilla eats everything. Neighbors holds over strong at #2.
