Pop-Break.com is proud to be an official sponsor of the first annual Asbury Park Surf Music Festival which takes place on Saturday, July 12th at The Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, New Jersey.
One of the cool perks of sponsoring a festival like this is discovering great new bands like the Cherry Hill, New Jersey band Blue Wave Theory. The band has this really great musicality to them — this isn’t straight up barrel rolls and reverb, there’s a lot of intricate guitar and drum work here and it’s awesome.
When we spoke with festival organizer Vincent Minervino, he said this about the band: “We’re excited to have Blue Wave Theory, representing South Jersey at the APSMF! These guys are one of the most dynamic surf groups out there – dancing across multiple surf sub-genres with smooth precision.”
Pop-Break caught up with guitarist Steve Rabeler as the band preps for The Asbury Surf Music Festival.
Pop-Break: Your band is from Cherry Hill, yet your music sounds like it’s from California. How was the unique sound of Blue Wave Theory developed?
Steve Rabeler: We originally intended to be a fusion of instrumental surf and progressive rock, but our sound keeps developing.
Pop-Break: What musicians have influenced the sound of Blue Wave Theory?
Steve Rabeler: Dick Dale, The Mermen, Los Straitjackets, and many others.
Pop-Break: If someone’s coming out to the Asbury Surf Music Festival and has never heard of you before, what song or songs would you recommend they check out in order to get what Blue Wave Theory is all about?
Steve Rabeler: Check out “Gumby Goes Green” and “Lava Spout.”
Pop-Break: When people see a Blue Wave Theory show, what can they expect from you guys as a live band?
Steve Rabeler: Three or four humans playing loud instrumental music whilst plugged into various amplifying equipment.
Pop-Break: What is it that you love most about being in Blue Wave Theory?
Steve Rabeler: Riding the endless waves of euphoria.
Pop-Break: You’ll be performing at The Asbury Surf Music Festival — what drew you to come play this show?
Steve Rabeler: We were invited by The Brigantines.
Pop-Break: You’re deserted on an island and you can only play one surf song and watch one surf movie for the rest of your life. Which ones would they be and why? (And if you’re wondering how you can listen to the song or see the movie, let’s assume you’ve created something amazing out coconut shells, palms trees and sand).
Steve Rabeler: “Miserlou” and The Endless Summer…obvious choices, but hard to beat.
Pop-Break: What are you most excited about for the band for the rest of 2014?
Steve Rabeler: Performing at The 1st Annual Asbury Park Surf Music Festival and the Bethlehem Musikfest this summer.
Blue Wave Theory performs at 5pm at The Asbury Surf Music Festival at The Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Click here for tickets.
