Remember that run in the 1990s when movie studios were scrambling to adapt any and all television series to the big screen? There were some home runs for sure, but for every success there was a Lost in Space, My Favorite Martian, Leave it To Beaver or MOD Squad.
Yet, it seems Hollywood is now picking its shots a lot better these days. Want proof? The #1 movie at the box office this weekend was The Equalizer. Now, to many this may seem like another Denzel action flick that’s using the Taken playbook of an aging action star kicking everyone’s ass. Yet, The Equalizer is actually a big screen adaptation of the popular CBS drama (which ran from ’85-’89) starring the late British actor Edward Woodward. The show, like the film, is a middle aged retired intelligence officer with a mysterious past who helps people in trouble.
So in honor, of this successful big screen adaptation of a small screen favorite, some of our film staff decided to talk about their favorite TV shows that got a big screen update.
Serenity.
Damn! How did that slip my mind? There may be an addition coming to this piece.
Any of the “Jackass” movies.
