Pop-Ed: Marry Me – Why You Should Watch

Marry Me

Summary: After a string of botched marriage proposals, longtime couple Annie (Casey Wilson) and Jake (Ken Marino) decide to put getting engaged on hold until they can get it together.

A to Z. Manhattan Love StoryAnd now Marry Me. In the wake of How I Met Your Mother’s final season, television seems to be scrambling to find that one show that is going to replace it. But first two shows on this list severely missed the mark –  the success of How I Met Your Mother has nothing to do with Ted’s search for the love of his life – a story that at many times was brushed aside and forgotten about. What audiences were so enthralled by was the unique style of comedy – one that surely grew tired in its seven year run, but absolutely brought something fresh and different to the sitcom scene in its first few years.

This is where the Marry Me pilot succeeds. Created by David Caspe (creator of Happy Endings!), and starring Casey Wilson and Ken Marino (two actors who have never ever steered me wrong), the Marry Me pilot already feels pretty close to being a seasoned comedy. It is witty and layered, with unexpected moments that will make you laugh out loud.

And this show has everything. Terrible people. Gay dads. Grand romantic gestures that end in disaster. A great cast. Both gay dads are named Kevin. Literally everything you could ever want out of a show.

If you miss Happy Endings as desperately as I do, you will feel at home tuning into Marry Me. The comedic style feels comfortable, and I mean that in the best way possible — It was like seeing my best friend again. You know, that old friend that ABC cancelled. The super quirky old friend who is smart and has great comedic timing.

I hope this one lasts.

She doesn’t discriminate against TV shows, which either results in pleasant surprise or an eviscerating review for your reading pleasure. Marla loves Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine Nine, and she will probably be watching new seasons of Grey’s Anatomy until she’s 90. Sometimes she writes TV shows herself, but they don’t air on television. She also likes big butts and she cannot lie. (That was a lie). @MarlaPachter
