logan j. fowler and bill bodkin review the new trailer for the comic book film …
Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Undecided.
After seeing new clips and trailers for Ryan Reynold’s take on Hal Jordan and his lantern o’ green, I must say that my interests grew. The special effects look 10 times better from what we saw in that first trailer, and Reynolds is really starting to demonstrate he may pull the character off. However, the CGI mask on R.R. makes him look like an absolute goof ball, and I really can’t escape that. I’m still leaning towards a theater viewing than a rental, but this one does not my comic book movie motor revving like Thor or Captain America (or even Cowboys And Aliens) does. Maybe because I’m a Marvel Comic fanboy, but still, while Green Lantern looks better with each clip I see, I still can’t warrant paying $14 for it right off the bat. When it comes to my verdict of undecided, I’m going to go with my usual quip of “I guess time will tell.”

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Maybe: Theater.
Green Lantern looks to be the first DC Comics film, outside of Batman, that I’ve ever been interested in seeing. Ryan Reynolds is always solid, providing the right blend of humor, heart and heroics to any action role he’s been in. He’s also buoyed by a fantastic supporting cast. Any time Tim Robbins AND Peter Sarsgaard are your main villains, you know you’re in for a good time. Throw in one of my favorite character actors, Mark Strong, as an ally of Reynolds, and you’re starting to get some seriously good acting in this film — more than the majority of comic book movies can say. I’m also quite impressed with the effects work, the alien worlds look fantastical and the Lantern weapons look crazy good. If they don’t go heavy-handed with the schmaltz and melodrama about intergalactic justice, this could be a fun and surprisingly well-acted summer popcorn flick.
