3. Thelma & Louise (1991)
This came really close to breaking the remaining top two, which at this point are pretty obvious. The only reason it misses out is because the romantic angle between Louise (Susan Sarandon) and Jimmy (Michael Madsen) is a little weak, and the diversion into that subplot breaks the momentum of the film. Other than that though, this is a fantastic piece of filmmaking from Ridley Scott. While the script is nearly flawless, it’s the two leads that propel this movie into the status it currently holds. Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon are dynamite. It’s some of the best chemistry you will ever see on screen. And despite the fact these women are criminals, Thelma and Louise are two of the most rootable and sympathetic characters in cinematic history. There’s also great supporting roles from Harvey Keitel and Christopher McDonald, old Shooter McGavin himself. If anything, I appreciate this movie for giving me one of my all time favorite Simpsons episodes, “Marge on the Lam.” Homer gets his arms stuck in two vending machines. Classic.
One other aspect to this film that must be addressed is the ending. Even if you haven’t seen Thelma & Louise, you probably know how it ends. It’s pretty iconic. If you watch the Siskel and Ebert review, I think Ebert brings up a great point, which I absolutely agree with. As great as this film is, it could have been that much better.
