6. Black Mass

If you’re a die hard Johnny Depp fan that’s had to endure people like me screaming in your face that he’s not that good of an actor, then you’ve been waiting for this movie your whole life. For ten years, all I’ve heard are the excuses that he just needs to be in a good movie. I held that belief for a while, but there comes a point where he just might not be that good. I’ve endured too many horrible Johnny Depp performances that was capped off by Mortdecai earlier this year, in which he delivered his opus of crap. Now we have Black Mass. Early reactions have been stellar, and the trailer certainly showcases an Oscar level type performance by Mr. Depp. To be honest, I’m still not sold. I’m intrigued, but every time I watch him as Whitey Bulger, it still feels a bit cartoonish. I have to think there was someone else who could have done more with the role, such as a Christian Bale or Tom Hardy. Odds are I’m going to eat my words. I hope I’m wrong. I want to be blown away by this performance, I really do. I’m also not a big Benedict Cumberbatch guy, who also plays the crucial role of Bill Bulger. With director Scott Cooper at the helm though, I wouldn’t be shocked if this became the Best Picture front runner. I’m pulling for Depp here. I really am.
