Review: Bettie Page #6

In Issue #5 we saw Bettie and McKnight take on killer radioactive scorpions. Somehow Bettie was lucky enough to save the day entirely by herself. Amazing to think she did all that with no training. So, I wonder how much more awesome Bettie could be if she had proper combat training? Imagine training mix with her level-headedness and ingenuity.

Well, that’s exactly where issue 6 picks up. McKnight recruits Bettie and wants to give her combat training. Of course Bettie accepts, but there’s always a catch. As a secret agent it must remain a secret. She can’t tell anyone what she’s seen or that she’s been trained. In only 2 weeks Bettie is ready to face the real world.

Unfortunately it seems secret agent work is pretty slow, so Bettie uses the down-time to take on more modelling and acting gigs. She soon gets a shoot booked with her photographer friend Jerry, and in the middle of the shoot guess who shows up with an assignment? You guessed it, McKnight. Just as soon as Bettie gets her feet wet she fails the mission. Her secret agent double-life didn’t last long, McKnight fires her on the spot because of her failure.

It doesn’t take Bettie long to find a new acting gig in a play called Pygmalion as the role of Eliza Doolittle. You can tell Bettie is happy for the work and enjoys it, but deep down she misses being a secret agent. She really seems to have a thirst for adventure. As she heads back to her dressing room there’s a knock on the door. A man’s voice tells her he’s a big fan and has flowers. As Bettie answers he hands her a beautiful bouquet and there’s a gun with a silencer in his other hand. Adventure came to Bettie, and she takes quick action utilizing the training she had as a secret agent.

Bettie takes down a large goon who told her to call him Ivan, but 2 more goons appear and they escort her out of her dressing room by gun point. Just as Bettie rounds the corner the amazing Lyssa appears and together the ladies take out the goons. They make their exit in a pretty swanky looking car. Lyssa tells Bettie they’re heading to McKnight’s office. After being fired and now having Russian goons try to kill her she’s pretty interested in meeting with him.

The ladies use this time to catch up. As they make their grand escape Lyssa confesses to Bettie that she was scooped up by McKnight too. Lyssa is now a secret agent, and the boss. I think it’s great because instead of taking orders from people that didn’t treat her well she gets to give them orders. This is right where Lyssa belongs in my opinion, as a leader. But, what does this all mean for Bettie? Especially after she was fired.

This issue had a few twists I didn’t see coming. After the end of issue #5 I figured Bettie would get training, but didn’t see her becoming a secret agent and getting fired on her first mission. Another thing I have to talk about is how happy I am that Lyssa wasn’t written out of the story. I was little worried we’d never see her again after the last issue.

She’s just as dynamic as Bettie Page is, and I’m very happy to see her back. I think the ladies work really well together and love their team-up. I also didn’t expect the ending of this comic so the twists were nice and refreshing. Of course I can’t go into detail on those twists without totally spoiling this issue. That being said you should pick up issue #6 at your local comic store.
