brent johnson digs up another lost treasure, this week from Siouxsie & The Banshees …
It was 2006, and I was sitting in a movie theater watching Sofia Coppola’s arty, pink-splashed biodrama Marie Antoinette. What I saw was jarring: A crowd of French aristocrats in lace, corsets and other 18th century garb … dancing to the music of ’70s new-wave icon Siouxsie & The Banshees.
The scene stuck with me. So did the song. It was called ‘Hong Kong Garden,’ I learned. And, like many great songs of the last half century, it was a Top 10 hit in Britain, but not so on the other side of the Atlantic.
Americans never know what they’re missing. The late ’70s — especially in Britain — were chock full of songs with immediately catchy riffs, incredibly melodic choruses and beats that can turn you into a human Pogo Stick.
‘Hong Kong Garden’ is one from the era I keep coming back to. Those first few plinking notes always jolt me. It’s also one of many great singles from a great cult band.
