10. A River Runs Through It (1992)
You could argue this one falls into the “Boring Brad” category. While the movie meanders around with no clear plot, the character Pitt plays is the real heart of the film. Set in Montana roughly after World War I, the story follows two competitive brothers who go on fairly opposite paths. The main character, Norman (Craig Sheffer), goes to college on the East Coast and lives a pretty scholarly life. Pitt’s character (Paul) is the more rebellious, writing controversial news articles, and constantly getting into gambling trouble. To be honest, Sheffer is the one who really hurts this film. The performance is completely yawn inducing and uninteresting. I’m not sure if that was the point, but regardless, he’s a totally flat character. Paul is who the film really should have been about. To the film’s credit though, the brother relationship is the movie’s real soul, and that works on every level. Whether they were fishing, or trying to beat each other’s brains in, their relationship kept me totally engaged throughout the whole movie.
