9. Sleepers (1996)
You might recall Sleepers at the time of its release. It starred a ton of popular actors at the time. Robert De Niro. Kevin Bacon. And even Dustin Hoffman, who gives a real weird performance as a shaky lawyer. Ultimately the film disappointed, but I think it’s worth a chance. While it takes a while to get going, the film becomes progressively more powerful as it goes along. The idea of these four kids who have their entire lives ruined because they were just being kids is an interesting concept. It’s tough to endure at times, but when the movie shifts to their adulthood in the second half, you’re really invested in their story because of all the build up. Pitt is definitely one of the better performances in the film, playing a lawyer who stealthily has to throw his case all in the name of revenge. There’s some real intense scenes, especially one at a bar with Kevin Bacon, who gives a terrifying, but gut-wrenching performance. The late nineties is where Robert De Niro started to become the bad De Niro, but this was one of his better roles at the time. His character holds a lot of weight at the end. Sleepers is not an upper of a film and certainly has pacing issues, but if you’re in the mood, it will hit you hard.
