3. X-Men: Days of Future Past
Crazy futuristic battles. 1970’s period piece. Magneto lifts a stadium. Quicksilver. This is why we go to the movies. X-Men: Days of Future Past is the most balls out superhero film I can think of. It’s spectacular. But aside from all the crazy action sequences, it’s the characters who matter. It’s amazing what director Bryan Singer was able to accomplish with so many characters and moving parts, but it flows together like a symphony. It’s an emotionally riveting tale that every single actor fully invests themselves in. That scene between the young Professor X and the old one gets me every time. It doesn’t feel like people playing dress up and having fun like in an Avengers movie. The stakes are high, and everyone is taking it seriously. The humor is also well timed and subtle, not in your face. It’s the kind of superhero film I yearn for, and it belongs in the same breath as Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. This is one hell of a ride.
