First Time I Saw It: It was Thursday night. I didn’t plan to see it at midnight but my roommate decided
to go last minute and I tagged along.
Importance in the Marvel Universe: Iron Man 2’s mission seemed to involve establishing characters that were going to be around for a while. IM2 was Don Cheadle’s first go at Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes aka War Machine. IM2 was the first time Sam Jackson got a chance to fill out the character of Nick Fury. Most importantly, IM2 was the first movie in which The Black Widow Natasha Romanov made an appearance. Thank God for that.
Why I Love It: Look, I’m not going to lie to you and pretend this was the best Iron Man movie. It wasn’t. There was a lot going on. maybe too much. You had the whole daddy issues thing. Tony is inventing new elements while he’s also kinda dealing with alcoholism kind of. And then on top of that, Whiplash is causing mayhem for some reason. But do you want to know why I will always watch this entire movie when I see it on FX?
Two words kids. Sam. Rockwell.
That’s right. You forgot how much fun Rockwell was as a far less cool Tony Stark, didn’t you? He was making jokes. He was dancing around. Sure, he was the villain but Justin Hammer was the fun villain. At a time when Christopher Nolan was taking over and everything was getting dark, Justin Hammer was exactly what we needed the keep the Marvel movies light. “I don’t speak Russian!” “I can’t put my head in there.” Bring him back for Iron Man 4! Also, make Iron Man 4.
Best Moment: Much of Iron Man 2 is what you could call “fan service”. They gave us what we wanted. From the gratuitous amounts of Scarlet Johnson to the big fight with the Hammer drones at the end, Iron Man 2 had the fans in mind. That being said, no moment in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was bigger fan service than the inclusion of the suitcase armor. 90’s kids remember that in the intro to the Iron Man cartoon, Tony Stark puts a suitcase on the ground and it turns into the Iron Man suit. Back then it didn’t make much sense, but the team at Marvel Studios made the silly suitcase armor not only practical but beautiful. –Matthew Nando Kelly
