The Channing Tatum led Gambit movie has taken another step closer to filming. Entertainment Weekly reports that Rupert Wyatt will be directing the upcoming spin-off of the X-Men franchise, which will feature the Magic Mike star as the titular mutant with the ability to turn objects into explosives.
Wyatt burst onto the scene in 2011 when he rebooted the long dormant Planet of the Apes franchise with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Most recently, Wyatt directed Mark Wahlberg in The Gambler. With Gambit, he’ll be returning to the action movie genre, as well as helm his first superhero movie.
Gambit will be a departure from the typical X-Men franchise, which seems to be rebranding itself. With Hugh Jackman preparing to leave the series in March 2017 after Wolverine 3 (his eighth turn as the clawed hero), Fox will be looking for a new movie star to carry on the franchise. In addition to Gambit, mutant fans will also be getting a Deadpool movie on February 12, 2016, which will star Ryan Reynolds as the wisecracking mutant mercenary. And, before he hangs up his claws for good in 2017, Jackman will star in X-Men: Apocalypse, which will be set in the 1980s and re-introduce many iconic mutants as teenagers. That film, which will co-star Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, and franchise newcomer Sophie Turner (best known as Sansa on Game of Thrones), will be released on May 27, 2016.
Gambit hits theaters October 7, 2016.
