Luke Kalamar: Rick Grimes, The Walking Dead

Rick’s one success, amid his many failures, has been keeping his kids Carl and Judith alive. This is the guy you’d want as a father when the dead walk the Earth. It’s almost as if Carl and Judith have golden tickets to survival. While so many people have died around them, these two have made it through some horrific shit. Carl especially has benefitted from this the most. He’s no longer baggage that Rick has to carry. This kid knows how to handle himself, and he developed that thanks to extensive training by his father. You could make the case that Carl would have survived without Rick thanks to Shane, but we don’t know that for sure. What we do know is that Rick was instrumental to Carl’s survival, and will continue to be so until the show ends (presumably).

Plus, take a look at all those little punks in Alexandria. Those are kids who were raised without someone telling them the truth of their world. They may be happy, but it’s simply blissful ignorance. As we saw in the finale, once shit hit the fan, they were useless. They will continue to be useless until someone steps up in their lives. You don’t need to worry about that with Carl though. He can run circles around the Alexandria residents, showing them up with the exact skills his father taught him in the early days.
