Our Favorite Moments from E3 2015

Eric Gallegos’ Top 3 Moments of E3

Make your Move

When this was first introduced last year, it only briefly caught my eye. I’ve never been one to spend the time to build levels, nor do I consider myself creative enough to create fun levels; however, I am a sucker for Mario games so it at least caught my interest. My opinion changed drastically when I saw Super Mario Maker in action at the finals for the Nintendo World Championships. I have not felt that giddy about a video game in such a long time. I’m now eager to see what kind of levels other people around the world will be constructing.

At its core, Super Mario Maker brings back the 2D Mario platformer and allows players to create any level they want. Players are then allowed to share their levels for others around the world to play and rate them. Super Mario Maker also brings in amiibo functionality. Scan a compatible amiibo, and you can play as a 2d pixelated version of that character. It’s a nice little extra that brings some cosmetic fun into the mix.

Super Mario Maker is definitely a day one purchase for me. I may attempt to create some levels, but I think my experience with it will be to play all the crazy levels others will be creating. If you’re still on the fence about this, do yourself a favor and watch the finals of the Nintendo World Championships.

What a Woolly World

Sometimes it’s nice to be able to play a fun, easy game and forget about all the troubles in the world. I wholly expect Yoshi’s Woolly World to be one of those games for me. I’ve always been a fan of the earlier Yoshi Island games, and I am excited to finally be able to play a high definition, cutesy, Yoshi game. The aesthetic of the game looks amazing, and it honestly looks like a fun and stress-free time for me.

No new information was announced at E3 for this game, but more gameplay was shown and it still looks as amazing as ever. Like Super Mario Maker, Yoshi’s Wooly World adds some amiibo functionality in it in the form of cosmetic changes to Yoshi’s appearance. These are some nice features, and I can’t wait to see what Yoshi looks like using a Pac-Man or Sonic amiibo.

Those amiibo’s are Animals!

Like many others, I was fully expecting Nintendo to announce an Animal Crossing game for the Wii U. When the trailer for this game appeared, I was beyond stoked! Then, it looked different. Wait a minute, are those board game pieces? Crud, it’s a Mario Party style game with an Animal Crossing skin. I was extremely disappointed. It looked…boring. I wasn’t alone as many Animal Crossing fans expressed their frustration and disappointment. On top of that, you need one amiibo per player to even play the game!

It has since been discussed that this will be a free-to-play game; the only expense will be buying the amiibos. That isn’t TOO bad. The project is still shrouded in secrecy though. Reports state that this board game mode is only part of a game and other modes/options will be available. It’ll be interesting to see what else is going on with this game. I am definitely disappointed we won’t be getting an Animal Crossing game just yet, but I will continue to follow this game to see if it is something I will want to play. Let’s face it though, those amiibos are too cute and awesome to pass up.
