Pop-Break Live: Afropunk Festival 2015 – Day 1
It was a festival filled with beautiful people and one of the most diverse line-ups we’ve experienced all summer-long. Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park was packed, as day one of the 2015 Afropunk Festival raged on. It was a gathering of punk, rock, funk, soul, and R&B blended into one vibrant, and kinetic day of music.
For those naive to the concept of the festival, it is and we quote — “The word AFROPUNK itself has become synonymous with open minded, nonconforming and unconventional, placing the institution at the epicenter of urban culture inspired by alternative music.”
The performers on the first day truly embodied this spirit. Punks like Letlive and Death Grips threw everything they had into their set, while iconic West Coast punks Suicidal Tendencies brought fans on stage to mosh to their wild sounds. The pregnant Kelis, who turned 36 the day before, enthralled festivalgoers with her intoxicating set. Headliners Ms. Lauryn Hill had the crowd eating out of the palm of her hand with her soulful voice. Yet, it was Grace Jones. Yes, Grace Jones! The same woman who went toe-to-toe with Arnold in Conan the Destroyer, and James Bond in A View to a Kill, who owned the night. At 67 years young, Jones wowed everyone with her larger than life persona and stage costume that consisted mostly of body paint.
