9. Hannibal kills Dr. Sutcliffe
By this is point in the first season, Will is experiencing hallucinations and other mental issues due to encephalitis of the brain. Hannibal discovers this, thanks to help from his former colleague Dr. Sutcliffe (John Benjamin Hickey). However, Hannibal convinces Sutcliffe to tell Will that the brain scan he conducted came up negative. Afterwards, Hannibal betrays Sutcliffe and makes it look like a deranged girl named Georgia Madchen (Ellen Muth) killed him. Georgia catches Hannibal in the act, but she cannot recognize his face due to a disorder she has (Hannibal later kills her too, just to be safe).
When I first saw this, I couldn’t believe it was on broadcast television (and it wasn’t the last time for I’d think this). Hannibal pulls Sutcliffe’s jaw back in a way I didn’t even think possible. In addition, the way in which the show visualizes how Georgia can’t see faces is very creepy; Hannibal’s face is essentially blank, save for a few indentations where his eyes, nose, and mouth should be. Hannibal is also strangely suave in his murdering get-up.
