Pre-Trailer Thoughts: I’ve seen videos and heard about World of Warcraft, but I have never played the game and probably never will. Still, I know it’s a big deal and that’s why this film is coming out, but will the movie do the game-and cinema alone-justice? -LJF
Pre-Trailer Thoughts: I admittedly have not played any of the Warcraft games, but the series has made and indelible mark on pop culture over the past two decades. A film version was only inevitable, especially after the massive success of World of Warcraft. Director Duncan Jones has more experience in sci-fi with movies like Moon and Source Code, but I really enjoy his style and I an excited to see how he handles a fantasy setting. – JTM
Rate the Trailer: 2 out of 5. I like the scope of the film, and that’s pretty much it. The CGI is downright killing me. I know that you couldn’t do some of the characters without it, but the lighting and textures are completely awful. Hopefully there will be some tune ups before the release of the film. In other news, this gave me no new interest in the game the movie is based on, or seeing the film for that matter. –LJF
Rate the Trailer: 3 out of 5. If it weren’t for it’s established franchise and promising directorial choice, it would be very easy to brush off Warcraft as just another CGI-laden fantasy film. The CGI did look incredible though, with the Orc characters expressing an amazing range of emotions and the battle scenes looking very complex and well-detailed. Part of me just wishes there was a bit more emphasis on getting to know those characters. I know that Duncan Jones is a filmmaker who is able to take things a step beyond the standard fantasy tropes and cliches, and I do have faith that the final product will be as deep as his previous works, but based off this trailer alone there’s not enough to give a full endorsement yet. – JTM
Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? No Thanks. I hope fans of the game will find something to like here. Ultimately though, I don’t feel like I’m going to miss out on anything. –LJF
Theater, Rent, Undecided, No Thanks? Rent. I think as more trailers come out I’ll be able to make a better decision if I want to go out to see this in the theaters, but for now I’m going to stick with waiting and streaming it. Either way Duncan Jones’ involvement has ensured that I do want to see it at one point, I’m just not sure when yet. – JTM
