Just like the monster in the original Cloverfield struck New York City without any warning — we’ve been hit with a new trailer for a “sequel” to the 2008 found footage monster movie.
Why did we put sequel in quotes, you may ask?
According to the film’s producer, J.J. Abrams the film is a “blood relative” of Cloverfield not a direct sequel.
The film’s plot may suggest why…
“After a car accident, a young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) comes to in an underground cellar, where most of the action takes place. She fears she has been abducted by a survivalist (John Goodman), who tells her he saved her life and that a chemical attack has left the outside world uninhabitable. Uncertain what to believe, she decides she must escape, whatever dangers she may face outside.”
There are some theories that “whatever dangers she may face outside” could be monsters similar to, or spawned from the original Cloverfield monster. Others have suggested the world may in fact be destroyed due to the sheer nuclear force the United States used against the monster in the first film.
Regardless, this will not be a “found footage” film like the first film, and from what we can tell, it does not involve any character from the first movie (and are you surprised?).
But that’s the brilliance of the Cloverfield mythology — the film has always been surrounded by an air of tantalizing mystery.
