Review: Transformers Optimus Prime #24

One left. The next-to-last issue of Optimus Prime sees some of the “younger” characters challenge and outright slam Optimus Prime and all he believes in.

Not to say this was a filler issue, but there was a lot we already read. The discontent among the troops, the inevitable arrival of Unicron, and the all-out widespread panic throughout Earth.

We also get a glimpse of the casualties from last issue and from Unicron. Various contributing artists this month put on a display similar to DC’s Final Night, where heroes and associated civilians prepare for the worst and try to comprehend as best as they can what is taking place around them.

It’s interesting how the issue falls out. It seems to take place either parallel to events in Unicron #5. The danger is present and looming above the sky, yet the dissent and in-fighting continues on the ground. There are some comparisons to older generations and the “next” generation of Transformers. I wonder if this is a clue to the reboot planned for 2019 or simply a nod to a passing of the old guard to another generation of Cybertronians who will have to rebuild once the threat is gone.

One issue to go. I wonder who will come out of this, if there is anything left at all. Optimus Prime this month gets a 6 out of 10. Sorry, but a bit heavy on beating the dead horse about the title of “Prime.”

Optimus Prime #24 is now available at comic book retailers.
