Firefly is written by Greg Pak, illustrated by Dan McCaid, colored by Marcelo Costa, and lettered by Jim Campbell. Firefly is published by Boom Studios.
Well Browncoats, the wait is over. Our favorite ship and crew are back in the forefront in this new comic series with the same title as the cult favorite show, Firefly. This issue takes no time to re-establish all of our favorite characters and their roles on the ship. This comic is absolutely safe for a person to pick up with fresh eyes that has never watched the TV series. Only a few mild spoilers here and there.
Now, long time fans don’t feel left out. There are also lots of things discussed in this first issue that ties directly into the series. The story begins with Wash and Mal going back and forth talking about the current state of the ship. And, it being on fire. No Firefly tale is complete without something or someone catching on fire or being thrown out of a window.
As a result the crew has to make the decision to die due to a ship fire, or land 2 weeks earlier than expected on a nearby planet. The funny thing about this planet? It’s very religious. It’s a dry planet, and they don’t like cursing. Outside of Book, the rest of the crew have a ridiculously hard time fitting in. It’s also ridiculously hilarious.
Something I really enjoyed about Firefly is how Pak did a great job of establishing characters for new readers. Pak also did a great job of teasing fans of the TV series by bringing up things fans have wanted answers to for years. Sadly, we don’t really get those answers, but hey they could be addressed as the story unfolds.
But, the comic definitely does continue after events are revealed within the series. I can’t say all the issues will be TV show spoiler free because this issue sure wasn’t. I do think it’s still safe for new fans to pick up and jump into though. The spoilers so far have been mild and just help perpetuate plot points . Something else that’s great about Firefly is that Pak did really well to capture each individual character’s voice. I could legit read along and hear the dialogue in my head.
