Rick & Morty (Cartoon Network – 2013-Present)
There’s no chance that when talking about the best TV shows of the last decade, that Rick and Morty would go unmentioned. The adult sci-fi animated series created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon has truly been unlike anything else.
Rick and Morty have become an absolutely iconic duo in such a short time through Rick cynical rants, Morty’s panic-filled shrill, and all of the wild adventures they’ve had over three full seasons and part of a fourth that’s just started up again. From pulling off inception on Morty’s math teacher in order to get him better grades only to run into a copyright safe version of Freddy Krueger that loves saying bitch to Rick facing off against the President of the United States in a battle to the death just because he won’t take a selfie with Morty, there’re having been plenty of crazy adventures with some colorful characters that have come with some great cameos.
Jordan Peele and Keegan Michael Key, Justin Theroux, Nathan Filion, Susan Sarandon, Christina Hendricks, John Oliver, and so many others have lent their voices to create some great characters. Hell, even Elon Musk came on for a recent episode to play a tusked version of himself as Rick and Morty pulled off the greatest heist possible – while I also making fun of heist movies.
Aside from the cameos and jokes, though, what’s made Rick and Morty special is the slow character development that’s been taking place over each season as Morty becomes more independent and assertive each season and Rick’s personal issues come to light. It’s kind of unfortunate that I only can vouch my love and devotion for this series in just a single paragraph, but I think the best way to describe my hopes for Season Four, as well as the rest of the series, has already been said by Rick in the very first episode.
