Super Bowl 54 is in the books. The game was a ton of fun to watch. The Chiefs and 49ers brought it down to the final minutes — it was a hard-hitting, thrilling game. Easily, a thousand times better than last year’s debacle.
The Pepsi Halftime Show perfectly complimented the game as Shakira and Jennifer Lopez put on a wildly entertaining spectacle.
However, we all know the reason we’re all here — the trailers. This year we got a lot of real quick teasers, unless if it was about the massively over-exposed Masked Singer. However, I don’t think any of us were truly ready for the big time Disney+ Marvel teaser we got, which easily stole the weekend.
So let’s get down to ranking the Super Bowl 54 trailers.
12. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run
Release Date: May 20, 2020
Voices: Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Keanu Reeves, Awkwafina, Clancy Brown,
Director: Tim Hill
SpongeBob is a cute family property, and this trailer was fairly harmless. However, did this both warrant a sequel AND a Super Bowl spot? I mean, $162 million domestically is a reason these days for a sequel, but I don’t see this one racking in the same money as the first one from 2015. If you’re a parent and filled with nostalgia this one is for you.
11. Minions: The Rise of Gru
Release Date: July 3, 2020
Voices: Steve Carrell, Pierre Coffin
Director: Kyle Balda, Brad Ableson
The Minions Universe seems to be the strongest tentpole in the Illumination/Universal portfolio. So, it should to no one’s surprise we’re now getting a Despicable Me prequel that is wildly Minion centric. This is the same thing you’ve seen from every other movie in this franchise. If you’re a parent, you’ve proudly pre-ordered tickets already.
10. Top Gun: Maverick
Release Date: June 26, 2020
Starring: Tom Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Val Kilmer, Ed Harris
Director: Joseph Kosinski
The initial trailer for this film was way better, but this served its purpose. It was a high octane hype piece to remind you that Top Gun is coming out. I love, love, love the visuals here, but could not give one iota of care about the clash between Cruise and Teller’s characters.
9. Fast 9
Release Date: May 22, 2020
Starring: Vin Diesel, John Cena, Michelle Rodriguez, Charlize Theron, Lucas Black, Jordana Brewster, Helen Mirren, Michael Rooker, Cardi B, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel
Director: Justin Lin
The abridged version of that four and a half minute spoiler-filled nonsense released on Friday. This is a much more effective way of shoving every character you know from previous films into the trailer, having 4,000 explosions and introducing John Cena as the bad guy. If you’re a Fast fan…do you even need a trailer, or do you just a tweet telling you where to buy tickets?
8. Locke & Key
Release Date: February 7, 2020
Starring: Jackson Robert Scott, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, Sherri Saum
Director: Various Directors
This is a nice tease for the Netflix series based on the popular graphic novel series. It has this weird Umbrella Academy meets Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children vibe to it. Not sure if this trailer does enough work to hook an audience, but it different raise an eyebrow.
7. No Time to Die
Release Date: April 10, 2020
Starring: Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas, Lea Seydoux, Rami Malek, Ralph Fiennes, Billy Magnussen, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Christoph Waltz, Jeffrey Wright
Director: Cary Joji Fukunaga
The new teaser for No Time to Die is a nice, quick, sexy tease for the upcoming Bond film, and works a wonderful compliment to the excellent first look trailer. It’s cut really well, so it’s all action, all drama. That’s what sells James Bond, and the excitement level for this film (for me) continues to rise.
6. Hunters
Release Date: Februry 22, 2020
Starring: Al Pacino, Logan Lerman, Jerrika Hinton, Lena Olin, Saul Rubinek, Carol Kane, Josh Radnor, Dylan Baker
Director: Multiple Directors
Much like the No Time to Die teaser, this was a really strong reminder that Hunters will be here in less than 20 days. This is a big time release for Amazon Prime, so I like that this came in the heart of the game, and added a new scene with Dylan Baker. This series has the potential to be a Top 10 if not Top 5 show of 2020. Can’t wait.
5. A Quiet Place Part II
Release Date: March 20, 2020
Starring: Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, Cillian Murphy, Djimon Honsou, John Krasinski
Director: John Krasinski
This trailer confirms that John Krasinski and his luxurious beard will be in the sequel. The pacing of the trailer with its quick cuts made it one of the more suspenseful trailers of the Super Bowl. I think this trailer, while it didn’t 100% convince me on the film, is the kind that would really floor people who loved the original film, but were unaware the sequel was coming out.
4. The Invisible Man
Release Date: February 28, 2020
Starring: Elisabeth Moss, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid, Sam Smith, Harriet Dyer, Michael Dorman
Director: Leigh Whannell
This was good. This was real good. This doesn’t rank higher because this was relegated to the pre-show. If it made the main game, it would’ve been higher because to me that means the studio means serious business about this film. It has a big upside, and I could see it scoring Us level box office receipts. I love the concept of this film, and I hope this being shown on Super Bowl Sunday gets more eyes on it.
3. Mulan
Release Date: March 27, 2020
Starring: Liu Yiefi, Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, Jet Li
Director: Niki Caro
Epic. Simply epic. Mulan is destined for big money at the box office. That was a given due to its lineage, and by virtue that Disney is releasing it. However, this was cut to give it that Crouching Tiger mind-bending feel, something people have forgotten they loved (remember that film grossed a ton back in the day). This action-first approach is geared to a football audience, and to me, they scored a lot of new potential ticket buyers here.
2. Black Widow
Release Date: May 1, 2020
Starring: Scarlett Johnasson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Rachel Weisz, O.T. Fagbenle, William Hurt, Ray Winstone
Director: Cate Shortland
The initial trailer was much better, but this tease totally Marvel-ized this film. It was dramatic cuts scored by a soundtrack crashing in. It’s all action. The narration draws parallels between Natasha’s family (Harbour, Pugh, Weisz) to the Avengers. That’s going to perk a lot of ears up. The original trailer felt more like a Bourne spy movie with Johansson, Weisz and Pugh playing the lead bad asses while Harbour served as comic relief. Listen, this was the big Marvel trailer, with all the Marvel trappings.
1. Marvel Studios Disney + Offerings
The Falcon & The Winter Soldier
Release Date: Late 2020
Starring: Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Daniel Bruhl, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell
WandaVision
Release Date: TBD in 2020
Starring: Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Teyonah Parris, Kat Dennings, Randall Park, Kathryn Hahn
Loki
Release Date: TBD in 2021
Starring: Tom Hiddleston, Sophia DiMartino, Owen Wilson
The best of the Super Bowl 54 trailers simply due to its impact.
I am not the biggest Marvel guy. I skipped Guardians 2, Ragnarok, both Ant-Man films, both new Spider-man films, and the final Avengers films. It’s nothing against these films, but I just haven’t been dying to see these films. However, what I am is a big Disney Plus guy. While insanely different, The Mandalorian and Forky Asks a Question have shown that Disney is about creating great, well-written content, and not just quick cash grabs, for their streaming service.
This teaser gave us really quick but very, very intriguing looks into The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, and WandaVision as well as a tease of Loki. WandaVision is the big mystery. We know Falcon is going to be a kind of buddy action romp, while Loki is all about Hiddleston’s performance. WandaVision is really interesting, and has the potential to be really weird, and really unique. The stuff we’ve seen here is super intriguing, and it has everyone talking. Disney wins once again.
Disney has ruled the movie box office for years, and now here it looks to do the same with streaming. This wins the best of the Super Bowl 54 trailers because on this hangover Monday, this is what everyone is talking about.
