‘Infamous’ Trailer Reaction: Bonnie & Clyde in a Social Media World

‘A modern day Bonnie & Clyde.’

It’s a description we’ve heard countless times to describe movies from True Romance to Natural Born Killers to Queen & Slim. The description is sometimes deadly accurate while other times, it’s used a blanket statement to describe a film where two attractive young people get in a car, guns in hand.

Infamous, which hits VOD and “virtual cinemas’ on June 12, takes the Bonnie & Clyde concept and thrusts it into a landscape of social media celebrity, thus giving it a more realistic tone and motivation than the blood-soaked thrill of the kill mantra of its like-minded predecessors.

Yes, instead of the blood-soaked ecstasy of bank-robbing and thrill kills, the rush Arielle (Bella Thorne) gets from her criminal exploits is from the likes, follows, and comments she gets from the videos of the robberies she posts to social media. Yes, in writing this does sound completely ridiculous, however given the stone cold reality of social media influencer obsession, the plot seems way less far-fetched.

The Infamous trailer reflects the millennial lens the story is told through. The color palette is drenched in day glow neon, characters are inked with illegible mantras and yet-to-be-finished sleeves, and the thud thud electro-synth soundtrack feels ripped right from Ariel’s Spotify playlist.

Simply put, Infamous might seem like a story we’ve seen before, but writer/director’s take on it definitely feels fresh. If the film can maintain the high-energy vibe of the trailer, it definitely could be a sneaky good VOD rent this summer.

The film also stars Jake Manley (The Order) as Ariel’s partner-in-crime Dean, as well as Glee’s Amber Riley and Super Troopers‘ Marisa Coughlan.
